Reflection 3: Enhance Communication (Week 3)

I personally don’t participate in chat/forum sites although I do enjoy reading and understanding other peoples insights and opinions on a particular subject. I’m only involved in one social media site which is Facebook, communication online like all different forms of communications has its advantages and disadvantages. The benefits of online communication can be seen through various social media, forums and through sites like reddit.

Reddit is an entertainment and social networking website, registered community members are able to submit posts and content over a range of different categories. As a daily reader and visitor of reddit, I have observed various discussions between members and have concluded with these thoughts. When a discussion is taking place between various members around a particular subject, it encourages members to reflect on the subject, participants don’t have to contributed immediately to the subject until they have thought about the issue well at hand before submitting a response.

Another benefit that I found that enhances communication significantly is the ability to be able to share real life experiences with other members. It is clearly a phenomenon in all forms of forum sites where it sets people free from any pressure when talking specifically about a deep personal issue. People seem to be able to talk open freely online comfortably with other members even with members you don’t know. While in real life talking to an individual about a personal issue tends to be rather uncomfortable. Because of this reason people tend to keep their personal issues to themselves since they don’t know how the other party is going to react. These benefits not only exists in reddit, it applies to all various forums and social media sites.

Reflection 2: Methods of communications technology (Week 3)

Technology has advanced and risen to the point where it has become such strong influences in our daily lives, that majority of people believe they would not be able to survive without technology. Technology has also become such an integral part of our society, our lives have become so dependent of technology that we can no longer separate ourselves from technology. Social media is constantly rising and evolving, we are at a point where people have formed relationship through online dating sites rather than face to face communication. Social media has become such a significant form of ways of communication.

I use three communication technologies, these consists of my laptop, iPhone 5 and iPad mini. Benefits of using these three devices are that you are able to keep in touch and communicate with your friends and family online by using social media sites such as Facebook. Owning a smart phones and a tablet make is so convenient as you are able to access Facebook where ever you go, since both of these devices are so portable.

Possible problems that could arise with using these technologies is that people tend to abuse their power when it comes to communicating online. People tend to ignore or let go of all the communication etiquette responsibility that comes when conversing with someone. Just because you are talking to someone online rather than face to face those same rules still apply. Like I have stated some people tend to abuse that power and tend to justify themselves by using the “Freedom of Speech” right. This results in all forms of cyber bullying and harassments towards users and each other which unfortunately is regularly often seen in society today.

I personally am not really a huge social media type of person, I do have a Facebook account but I hardly ever go on it, I’m not like those people that constantly on Facebook 24/7. I do go on Facebook from time to time but I normally only go on it if I really need to ask somebody about a particular topic. In terms of not being able to go on Facebook to communicate for a week I could do easily do that. Although when it comes to not being able to go access the internet at all I probably couldn’t go without it for a week.

Communication is a vital and essential part of human interactions, humans thrive on interaction and communication, it is essentially a basic human need. You want the receiver to be able to comprehend your message in order to respond back. Here is where the importance and benefits of an effective communication plays a role in our daily conversations. A person who I believes communicates effectively would be one of my friends Jasmine. Aspects that she exhibits which makes her an effective communicator is her approach towards the timing of the conversation and her attitude and tone throughout the conversation that is being exchanged. Even if there is a point where she clearly doesn’t agree with an opinion or even become offended, she will remain calm and collected and won’t lash out at the other person. Her presentation of her topic are clear and concise she doesn’t revert to using technical language and jargon. Since she is studying to become a nurse being an effective communicator is definitely a vital skill to learn and have.
